Is there any price-gouging going on as in the aftermath of Katrina?

It's a catch-22. Rivers and sea ports are prone to flooding, but are also good for trade and transport.

They got lucky this time but the fact that they rebuilt in a known flood area is just asking for trouble.... next time better not use MY money to rebuild in a flood area!

The southern parishes of Louisiana are built on the Delta... there is no "learning how to better deal with the weather" there... those folks are ALWAYS at risk, but it is all they have and all they know

Companies are not going to withhold their materials. It wouldn't be cost effective. After all, if company A starts producing, then company B is out that money. And one company isn't supposed to "help" another company in this fashion. It would be judged as "anticompetitive" and thus illegal.

Gas stations need electricity to pump gas (or they could use a generator, since they have gas/diesel to run the generator) But if the power was out for a long time, all the refigerators would have been off. I wouldn't buy any of the food in the convience store (except the non refigerated stuff)

Loofs like this Hurricane Season is going to be like it was 3 years ago when one after another just kept coming and hitting hard. I hope it is not but it's going to be interesting to say the least and I live in North Carolina so I may get the winds and the volume of rain from them all... Not looking forward to it I can tell you that...

You know I think that the oil companies want to drill off of the east coast of America so they can drive the price of oil UP, not down.
Think of it, every time a hurricane comes through the gulf, oil goes up. If the hurricane goes up the eastern seaboard, the prices stay the same.
If they had rigs out on the eastern continental shelf they could raise the price of oil EVERY TIME a hurricane came though!
Just a thought.

Doesn't sound like a big deal. A few spot shortages until electric power is restored. Very little impact on the big oil/gasoline production picture.

Well, rjb21760 had a dumb suggestion. It seems New Orleans residents need to do what Florida people have become accustomed to doing, stock up before hand and prepare for the worst.
